AS9100D — Aerospace Quality Management System

Complete guide to AS9100D quality management system standard for aerospace manufacturing. Requirements, certification process, key clauses, and implications for titanium component suppliers.

qualitySAE International / IAQG

Quick Answer

What is AS9100D?
AS9100D is the internationally recognised quality management system (QMS) standard for the aerospace, defence, and space industries. It incorporates all requirements of ISO 9001:2015 with over 100 additional aerospace-specific requirements covering risk management, configuration management, design control, product safety, counterfeit part prevention, and traceability. Certification to AS9100D is typically mandatory for Tier 1 and Tier 2 aerospace suppliers and is increasingly required throughout the supply chain for titanium machined components.

Scope

AS9100D applies to organisations that design, develop, manufacture, install, or service aerospace products. For titanium component suppliers, the standard covers the full scope of operations from material receiving and inspection through machining, heat treatment, surface finishing, inspection, and delivery.

Key areas of applicability for machine shops:

  • Raw material receiving and verification (including MTR review)
  • CNC machining and fabrication processes
  • Special processes (heat treatment, surface treatment, welding)
  • Inspection and testing (dimensional, NDT, mechanical)
  • Final acceptance and shipping

Key Requirements

Aerospace-Specific Clauses (Beyond ISO 9001)

Clause Requirement
8.1.3 Risk Management — Risk assessment for product conformity and on-time delivery
8.1.4 Configuration Management — Documented configuration control plan
8.3.4 Design and Development — Design reviews, verification, and validation
8.4.1 Counterfeit Parts — Prevention and detection of counterfeit material
8.5.1.2 Special Processes — NADCAP or customer-approved special process sources
8.5.3 Product Safety — Identification and management of product safety risks
8.7.1.1 Nonconforming Product — MRB (Material Review Board) disposition process
10.2.1 Nonconformity and Corrective Action — Root cause analysis and 8D reporting

Documentation Requirements

  • Quality Manual — Scope, processes, and QMS framework documentation
  • Procedures — Documented procedures for all key processes
  • Work Instructions — Process-specific work instructions for machining operations
  • Records — Traceability records (batch/lot/serial number), inspection reports, MTRs
  • First Article Inspection (FAI) — Per AS9102 for production parts

Material Traceability

  • Full chain-of-custody documentation from mill to finished part
  • Lot traceability for all titanium raw material
  • Segregation of material by grade, lot, and heat number
  • Positive material identification (PMI) testing per customer requirements

Typical Applications

  • Structural Aerospace: Flight-critical machined brackets, ribs, and fittings from titanium
  • Engine Components: Compressor blades, discs, casings, and mounts
  • Landing Gear: Structural pins, axles, and support brackets
  • Aerospace Fasteners: Titanium bolts, screws, and rivets with full lot traceability
  • Hydraulic Systems: Manifolds, valve bodies, and fittings
  • Defence: Armour components, missile structures, military aircraft parts
  • Space: Satellite components, launch vehicle structural parts
  • Grade 5 Titanium (Ti-6Al-4V) — Most commonly machined titanium under AS9100D
  • Grade 23 Titanium (Ti-6Al-4V ELI) — Enhanced toughness for aerospace applications
  • Grade 2 Titanium — CP titanium for non-structural aerospace components
  • Grade 9 Titanium (Ti-3Al-2.5V) — Aerospace hydraulic tubing material
  • 5-Axis CNC Machining — Complex aerospace components under AS9100D QMS
  • CNC Milling & Turning — Production parts with AS9102 first article inspection
  • Wire EDM — Precision aerospace components with full traceability
  • Quality Inspection — CMM, vision, and NDT inspection with AS9100-compliant documentation
  • Surface Finishing — Anodizing, passivation, and polishing per aerospace specifications
