Quick Answer
What is Grade 1 titanium?
Grade 1 is the softest and most ductile of the commercially pure (CP) titanium grades, with 99.5% minimum titanium content and the lowest levels of interstitial elements (oxygen, nitrogen, carbon, hydrogen, iron). It offers exceptional formability, outstanding corrosion resistance, and excellent weldability with the lowest strength of all CP grades.
Chemical Composition
| Element | Weight % |
|---|---|
| Titanium (Ti) | balance (≥ 99.5%) |
| Iron (Fe) | ≤ 0.20 |
| Oxygen (O) | ≤ 0.18 |
| Carbon (C) | ≤ 0.08 |
| Nitrogen (N) | ≤ 0.03 |
| Hydrogen (H) | ≤ 0.015 |

Weldability & Formability
Grade 1 offers the best formability of any titanium grade. It can be cold formed, deep drawn, bent, and flanged with minimal spring-back. Welding is straightforward via TIG, MIG, plasma, and resistance welding methods. Proper argon shielding is essential to prevent oxygen embrittlement.
Typical Applications
- Chemical Processing: Heat exchangers, reaction vessels, piping systems, liner sheets for chemical tanks
- Medical: Surgical instruments (non-implant), instrument trays, sterile packaging trays, orthopaedic external fixation devices
- Marine: Seawater piping, heat exchanger tubing, desalination plant components, marine anodes
- Architectural: Building facades, roofing panels, decorative cladding, structural art installations
- Aerospace: Non-structural interior components, hydraulic tubing, ducting in non-pressurised areas
